There are many people out there who have been victims of their circumstances. They work jobs and professions that get them nowhere. Once on the treadmill, it's hard to know how to turn it off. It takes an extraordinary opportunity for the right person to begin producing extraordinary results. Finding the right people is part skill and part luck.
CONNECTION
I've been very lucky over the years to have been connected to the most awesome average people that turned out to be diamonds in the rough. As the company has matured, I realize that average people will come in as helpers, delivery personnel and clerks then begin to shine. Just the other day, one of our new materials support persons passed me in the hallway and asked, "Would you mind if I washed your truck?". I was impressed at the approached and now I know who my next rising star is. That is one smart person with an extraordinary attitude!
DEDICATION
It's one thing for employees to turn it on now and then or say what we want to hear. It is another thing when it becomes evident that he or she has become dedicated. It's really refreshing when people take ownership in what they do. High performance will never come from someone who is just going through the motions. Measure your dedicated employees by asking yourself the following questions:
- Does he show up a little early or is he more often late?
- Does she punch out at exactly closing time?
- Does he write down your request for action items?
- Do you have to monitor the execution of your action requests?
- Do you feel like a GPS tracking device is needed?
VISION
After a good connection and evident dedication comes vision. Vision can be installed only if we share it. The ultimate vision comes from the top. If you're lucky, others in the organization who have the vision will share it and install it for you.
Talk to your employees. Invite them into your office when they walk by. Tell them what you have been through and how they play an important role in the present and in the future. Let them know they are appreciated then step back and watch what happens. If they know you care about them, they will begin to care about you and share your vision.
Employees with extraordinary vision will produce extraordinary results. Never forget that most of us are average people but in the right environment, we will flourish! I have seen it again and again. Average people can produce extraordinary performance.
